CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (BusinessWire EON) August 15, 2007 --
Technology Review
today announced the 2007
Humanitarian and Innovator of the Year as part of its annual TR35
awards honoring the top 35 innovators under the age of 35. The
Humanitarian of the Year honor goes to Tapan Parikh at the University of
Washington, and the Innovator of the Year is David Berry, a principal at
Flagship Ventures.
Tapan Parikh, an
Intel Fellow and PhD candidate in the department of computer science and
engineering at the University of
Washington, was chosen for his work creating information systems
that address the unique requirements of small-business people in
developing economies. Working closely with the self-help groups that
account for a large portion of the microfinance business in India,
Parikh developed a
mobile phone application for managing financial information and
processes.
David Berry is
being recognized for his work developing the technology behind LS9,
an emerging biotechnology company. In collaboration with George
Church of Harvard Medical School and Chris
Somerville of Stanford University, Berry and the team at Flagship
Ventures used the tools of synthetic biology to design
microorganisms that can produce renewable petroleum fuels.
“Both of these young innovators have devised
novel approaches to significant technological challenges, and we are
pleased to recognize their valuable contributions,”
noted Jason
Pontin, editor in chief and publisher of Technology
Review.
Parikh, Berry and the rest of the 2007
