TelecomCareers Survey: U.S. Economy Down, TMT Up: Telecom, Media, Technology Industry Optimistic About Future

What is the future of telecommunications, media and technology (TMT)? Results from a recent survey by TelecomCareers, an online job board for telecom, media & technology, in which TMT professionals were asked about the future of the industry, biggest growth areas, and finding a job in this tough economic environment.
The pace of change in the TMT industry is so rapid that specialty career sites are becoming increasingly valuable to job seekers and employers

Austin, TX (PRWEB) September 8, 2008 -- Though they expect the overall U.S. economy to worsen over the next 6-12 months, workers in telecommunications, media and technology (TMT) are optimistic that their industry will perform better, according to a survey released last week.

(PRWEB) September 8, 2008 -- When asked about the immediate future of TMT, 70 percent of respondents said they believe the industry would grow or remain consistent, compared to only 40 percent who thought the U.S. economy would fare as well, according to the survey by TelecomCareers, an online job board for telecommunications, media and technology professionals and conducted by Illuminas.

"It is clear that while TMT professionals may be wary of the state of the overall economy, they are bullish on where their industry is headed, particularly in the wireless sectors," says John Scarborough, TelecomCareers' vice president and general manager.

According to the survey, respondents believe the biggest opportunities in the TMT sector lie within three categories: wireless (40%), infrastructure engineering and manufacturing (16%), and mobile application development (16%).

Recent data suggests that consumers are curbing expenses by trimming vacations and driving less frequently, but most are unwilling to give up their cell phones, digital cable and Internet connections, says Illuminas managing director Jay Shutter.

"This may explain why 63 percent of respondents believe global business spending on TMT will improve or stay consistent," said Shutter.

The 880 respondents of the survey were also asked questions related to job security, opportunity, and the most effective means for securing the right job for them. Significant findings include:

·   Over half believe that job websites significantly improve their ability to find the right job.

·   Half of respondents believe networking (online and in-person) is the most effective method of finding a job.

·   Specialty job boards are considered more effective for finding the right job than general job boards.

"The pace of change in the TMT industry is so rapid that specialty career sites are becoming increasingly valuable to job seekers and employers," said Scarborough. "In addition to job postings from the industries leading companies, TelecomCareers provides news, association and company information, and networking events relevant to those in the industry. Consequently, our members are better informed and more qualified, making it easier for employers to make great hires."
