Characterized by varying demand trends, the automotive glass market is currently in the midst of a moderate growth phase. Unfavorable conditions in automotive industry have taken their toll on the automotive glass industry worldwide. Decreasing demand was coupled with increased production, creating an oversupply situation in the marketplace, which was fostered largely by the assumed growth in demand for glass. Industry players are under intense pressure on pricing, which led to under utilization of capacity.

San Jose, California (PRWEB) July 17, 2007 -- World Automotive Glass market is forecast to reach 390.3 million square meters by 2010 at a CAGR of 3.15% over the 2001-2010 period. Though Europe constitutes the largest market for Automotive Glass with an estimated share of 32.29% in 2006, much of the growth is expected to be fueled by the Asia-Pacific region that is projected to register a CAGR of 7.87% over the aforementioned period. With a share of 40.28%, Windscreens market is the dominant segment in the global Automotive Glass market, in addition to being the fastest growing with a CAGR of 3.30% over 2001-2010. Other segments analyzed include Body Screens market and Rear Screens market.

Of the two end use segments, OEM and Aftermarket, the former, with a share estimated at 76.61% in 2006, constitutes the largest as well as the fastest growing segment, with a CAGR projected to be 3.25% over 2001-2010.

A general slowdown in automotive industry in recent years is reflected in the slowdown in demand for auto glass in the OE (Original Equipment) end-use segment. However, on a positive note, decreased growth of automotive industry is slightly offset by concentrated high demand for large vehicles such as minivans and pickup trucks and by increased usage of automotive glass per vehicle. In addition, there is a short-term spike in demand for safety and bulletproof specialty auto glass.

However, glass is still expected to witness a boom period in the years to come. The emerging markets are expected to register larger growth rates, as against mature markets. Further, need for enhanced energy efficiency, increased security, safety and comfort have led to increased demand for value added auto glass. High enduring and high quality automotive glass continue to challenge the replacement market sales. However, aftermarket use of automotive glass is shrinking and is being replaced to a large extent by demand in Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) segment. This is mainly due to increase in glass durability that has led to reduced need for replacement.

In the global automotive glazing industry, among the various trends witnessed, concentration of players appears to be the prime factor monitoring both automotive industry and auto-glass manufacturing sector.

Major automobile industries have strengthened their capabilities as well as augmented their efforts to develop modern automobiles with highly sophisticated designs, which are engineered and manufactured with the latest and traditional technologies, creativity and artistry, and continue to be a known, trusted and loved brand. All the top players in the industry are producing their vehicles with high quality glass materials, considering all the major safety issues.

Emergence of large array of glass including smart glass, automatic darkening glass, low-emissivity glass, solar control glass, and bullet-resistant glass has increased market value of the product. Particularly after the terror attack in US, demand for bulletproof glass has drastically increased.

An upbeat trend in energy conservation awareness and implementation of the same through strict regulations has enhanced demand for energy conserving auto glass. Use of low emissivity automotive glass is largely implemented in European countries including France, Germany, Italy and UK.

Consumption of glass in automotives, especially the luxury car segment, has considerably increased with the introduction of latest features including glass roofs. Key models including Ford Fiesta, GM Astra and VW Golf are using 20% more glass in cars due to the presence of greater glazed area. Further, introduction of furnace technology has aided in developing new shapes of safety glass. In North America, demand for automotive glass is propelled by increased use of light trucks, and this trend is flourishing in the European countries, too.

Major players covered in the report include Asahi Glass Company, Pilkington plc, PPG Industries, Saint-Gobain Sekurit International and Visteon Corporation.
