Concerned Elmwood Neighbours Plan to Send Message to City Hall

Elmwood residents will be meeting on Aug 30th to fight the city's decision to close Kelvin Community Club and sell the land where the building sits.

Winnipeg, MB (PRWEB) August 25, 2006 -- The General Council of Winnipeg Community Centres (GCWCC) made a recommendation to city council to close Kelvin Community Centre, and council approved the decision without any of the residents of Elmwood being consulted. In response, the residents of Elmwood will be meeting to draft and approve a statement that will be presented to the city. This statement will voice the displeasure of the community in having not been consulted and will outline several options that the residents of Elmwood want to explore further. It will also be made apparent that the community will not accept any of the decisions that were made without adequate community consultation.

The meeting is to be held at 7 pm on Wednesday, August 30th, at Kelvin Community Centre (281 Henderson Hwy). Councillor Lillian Thomas (Elmwood – East Kildonan Ward) will be in attendance. If the city closes and padlocks the community centre on or before that date (there has been no public mention of this possibility), the meeting will be held outside on the grounds of Kelvin Community Centre.

Flyers are currently being distributed to many Elmwood residents inviting them to come to the meeting, and a good turnout is expected. Kelvin Community Centre bylaws state that twenty community members must be in attendance at a meeting in order for decisions to be made, and it is expected that this number will be far exceeded.

“If they’re (the City) taking something from Elmwood,” says John King, a longtime Elmwood resident, “they need to give something back. We want to turn it into something that is worthwhile for the community.”
