Where in the U.K can you find the most compelling museums or thrilling club scene? Is the city with the most attractive citizens also the one with the friendliest locals? According to a new survey, Britain has some strong opinions on the merits of our nation's top urban destinations.
Leeds, UK (PRWEB) January 21, 2008 -- The survey, carried out by Waterfall Spa -- a luxury city centre day spa in Leeds -- asked voters for their opinions on culture, shopping, people, nightlife and other characteristics of cities across the U.K. While some winners were predictable -- the best city for shopping? London, of course -- there were a few surprise winners and some very definite losers.
Singles on the look out for love would do well to head to Leeds this Valentine's Day. Over a third (36.3 per cent) of voters considered Leeds locals to be Britain's best looking bunch. The Jennifer Aniston of urban destinations, the city proves it is possible to combine good looks with a great personality by charming its way to the title of UK's friendliest city with 37 per cent of the vote.
Unsurprisingly, northern cities dominated the 'friendliest locals' category. Following Leeds came Newcastle (14.9 per cent), Liverpool (9.5 per cent) and York (10 per cent), while Britain made it clear that, with less than two per cent of the total vote between them, Bristol and Southampton need to brush up on their personal skills! If its brains you're after, head for Oxford, Cambridge, Leeds and London but steer clear of Cardiff -- the Welsh capital scored a zero in the most intellectual city category.
Promised your sweetheart a weekend of unforgettable romance? Just under a third of us (32.6 per cent) say Cupid's bow points firmly towards York as the UK's most romantic destination. Tied at bottom of the list with 0.2 per cent each, it appears the love bug hasn't spread to Birmingham or Southampton.
London remains the UK's favourite destination for shopaholics and culture-vultures and was the overall winner for its cosmopolitan attitude.
Pamela Elliot, CEO of Waterfall Spa in Leeds said: "The survey certainly threw out a few surprise results. In categories such as friendliest people I would have expected the Scottish cities to come out tops, but Leeds was a clear winner. Overall it was intended as a fun way of assessing what we think of our diverse cities."
The survey, carried out by Waterfall Spa in January 2008, asked 600 people across the UK to give their opinions of top UK destinations including Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Oxford, Southampton and York.
